It is not the sort of feature that most loft ladder suppliers mention in their product headlines. While we do our best to make dimensional data available and easily accessible, it can be a hassle going through each product one-by-one. We love our products, but appreciate that not everyone wants to spend hours studying their technical specifications!

Concertina loft ladders

Why is it important to choose a loft ladder with wide treads?
One of the most important reasons for choosing wide loft ladders is safety. A wide tread/step allows users of the loft ladder to achieve a more secure footing. It also helps achieve better balance. Another important factor is ease of egress and comfort. Choosing a loft ladder with wide steps is particularly recommended for commercial/industrial applications, and residential applications where the loft ladder is used more frequently.
The tread width of our retractable concertina loft ladders is variable. They are manufactured such that the tread width is maximised to suit your ceiling opening width. Our range of Supreme loft ladders (pictured here) offer the greatest range of widths – with steps up to 580mm wide. They also benefit from tread depths of 140mm (or 160mm for larger step widths of 430mm to 580mm).

Retractable wide loft ladders. Variable tread width to suit ceiling opening.
Unlike concertina loft ladders, their wooden counterparts feature fixed tread/step widths. These are detailed in the table above and in the attached datasheet. With tread widths from 330mm and a tread depth of 80mm (standard across the whole range) our wooden loft ladders provide safe and comfortable access to loft/attic spaces and offer minimal protrusion above the hatch.
