Why buy a concertina loft ladder?
Concertina loft ladders are the perfect choice where space is an issue. They can be fitted within much smaller ceiling openings compared with folding timber and steel loft ladders. Furthermore, they often require less space in the room when extending and retracting. Also, because concertina ladders are made from metal (either aluminium or steel), they are naturally very durable.
All of the products offered by Premier Loft Ladders are designed with safety as a primary consideration. With the exception of the Piccolo, they all feature a counter-balanced spring mechanism, which makes them very easy to operate and prevents the ladder from falling down under its own weight. Furthermore, they have been assembled with high-quality components to ensure rigidity during use and lasting durability.
Another safety benefit is the ability to fit much bigger treads than can be achieved with a traditional folding wooden ladder. Therefore providing a better and more stable footing when climbing the ladder.
As a result, our range of concertina ladders are suitable for some of the most challenging situations – from very high ceilings to vertical apertures. Furthermore, the heavy-duty ‘Supreme’ and ‘Elite’ product families are also ideally suited for use in commercial and industrial situations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a concertina loft ladder fit in a small ceiling opening?
Yes. Concertina loft ladders are very well suited to small ceiling openings. However, there are minimum opening size requirements, which will depend on the model of ladder you want, the height of the ceiling and if the ladder is supplied with or without a hatch. Minimum dimensions are published throughout our web site. Please contact us if you are not sure what ladder will work in the space you have.
Is it difficult to open and close a concertina loft ladder?
No. A well designed concertina ladder should be easy to operate. Firstly, make sure that any loft ladder you buy conforms to BS EN 14975. This industry standard ensures that the ladder will achieve basic safety and operability requirements (click here to learn more). Furthermore, good quality concertina ladders will be designed with safety as the number one priority. As such, they will feature a spring counter-balance mechanism that assists the opening and closing of the hatch (where applicable) and the extension/retraction of the ladder itself.
How rigid is a concertina loft ladder?
People are often worried that concertina ladders will not be as rigid or sturdy as a folding or sliding ladder. This is a justified concern when considering low-cost products. However, a good quality concertina loft ladder will have precision engineered parts, which minimise play (movement) in the joints and provide excellent rigidity. This is especially true for products such as the heavy-duty Elite and Supreme families of loft ladders, which are made from high-strength cast aluminium components with tight manufacturing tolerances.
Are concertina ladders expensive?
The purchase price of a concertina ladder can be higher than other types of loft ladders. This is because the material costs are generally higher and more work is involved during the manufacture and assembly process. Also, concertina ladders tend to include more sophisticated counter-balance systems (for easy operation), which also incur higher costs. However, because concertina ladders are made from metal, they are more durable than timber loft ladders and should last many years. Therefore, the lifetime cost savings should outweigh the initial higher purchase price, especially for commercial applications and more demanding domestic projects.
Can a concertina ladder be used in high ceilings?
Yes, they can definitely be used in high ceilings. Lighter-duty models can typically be used in ceilings up to 3m, while heavy-duty ladders can reach ceilings as high as 4.6m.
Always check the maximum ceiling height for the ladder you are buying and make sure you do not exceed that range when fitting it.
Are these ladders available from stock?
Premier Loft Ladders offer a range of products that are available from stock. Items held in stock include the Elite and Piccolo Premium, along with many of the common accessories. The rest of our products are made-to-order to meet your individual needs. Lead-times are typically 4-6 weeks, depending on the product and specification.
