Keeping in the warmth

The days are getting shorter and the weather getting colder – winter is on its way.  If you are considering a new loft access hatch and ladder it’s therefore important to choose one that offers good thermal insulation and an airtight seal.  This will help you to keep in the warmth and lower your energy costs.

We have produced a useful guide for you. It is designed to help you understand the important features to look for when choosing your new loft ladder. Such as the amount of thermal insulation the hatch provides and air permeability ratings.

Types of loft access hatch and ladder

An Insulated loft access hatch and ladder can come in a variety of styles.  These include folding wooden loft ladders, retractable aluminium ladders, or even electrically operated loft ladders.

Wooden loft ladders are particularly popular for their traditional style and aesthetic appeal, such as the Quadro (pictured here). The Quadro offers good thermal insulation (U-value of 0.77 W/m2K) and is class 4 air permeability rated (the highest rating achievable). It is also available made-to-measure for a perfect fit.

Alternatively, retractable loft ladders are better suited for small ceiling openings. The lightweight and durable Ecco retractable aluminium loft ladder is available for ceiling openings as small as 800mm x 550mm.  It also offers good thermal insulation (U-value of 0.77 W/m2K) and is class 4 air permeability rated.

Achieving Passivhaus standards of thermal insulation

Premier Loft Ladders offer insulated loft access hatch and ladders for Passivhaus applications.  The Passive House Institute certified Designo Passivhaus offers U-values as low as 0.60 W/m2K, while the Klimatec 160 (pictured) offers a U-value of just 0.34 W/m2K.

Furthermore, the Designo DD and Supreme DD loft ladders feature a secondary upper cover that can be closed immediately after entering the loft. This helps to keep in the warmth and prevents moist air from flowing into the loft and condensing in the cold areas.
